  　Increased obesity and inactivity are the primary cause in developing countries such as India and in Latin America, the Caribbean and the Middle East.  
　A huge burden of medial costs and physical disability lying ahead in this century, as diabetes increases a person's risk of heart attack, kidney failure, blindness and some infections.
　Diabetes is a metabolic ailment in which the body is unlikely to rapidly or adequately move sugar out of the bloodstream and into tissues after a meal.
　「国家にとっても個人にとっても負担となる糖尿病にならないために、肥満に気を付け、運動を心がけなさい。」という記事。
　
　この記事の最後に、「この研究では、各国の糖尿病有病率と平均空腹時血糖値は、年齢標準化された数値である。」という記述があった。(In the study, each country's diabetes prevalence and average fasting blood sugar are "age-standardized" calculations. )
　では、その"age-standardization"とはどのようなものか、そしてその問題点は何か、次の英文を読んで答えてください。

　Each country is treated as if it had the same age structure of its adult populationーthe same number of people age 25 to 29, the same number 30 to 34, and so on. Age standardization allows researchers to compare countries whose populations have a high percentage of old people with countries with fewer old people.
　The actual number of people in the world with diabetes, however, reflects not only the underlying rate of the disease in each age group but also the size and structure of the global population today.
　Between 1980 and 2008, the number of diabetics more than doubled, from 153 million to 347 million.

  　日本でも人気のあったアメリカの俳優が亡くなったことを知らせる記事を読んだ。次のヒントで分かったら勘の鋭い人だ。

　答えは、刑事コロンボ(Lt. Columbo)でおなじみの、Peter Falkさん。アルツハイマーを患っていたそうだ。
　He was 83 and had been diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease.

　彼ほど一つの役を長年にわたって演じてきた俳優は、アメリカでも珍しい。３歳の時に悪性腫瘍のために失った右目は義眼で、ぼさぼさ頭と相まって、犯人を追いつめる天才的な能力の持ち主だとは微塵も感じさせない。

　容疑者の警戒心を解くために、決め手となる証拠を突き付けるのではなく、かみさんから頼まれた買い物リストをトレンチコートから取り出したり、「あと一つだけお伺いしたいんですが。」という例の名ゼリフで始まる事件とは無関係と思われる巧みな質問で、容疑者の不用意な一言を引き出す。
　To catch suspects off guard, Columbo would often fish a shopping list our of his trench coat instead of a crucial piece of evidence. He could procure an inadvertent confession by prefacing his question with a seemingly harmless, "Just one more thing".
June 26　Superfly takes a heavy trip
　日本のJ-popシーンの中でも人気・歌唱力ともに備えた実力派、スーパーフライの特集記事。ボーカルの越智志帆が地元愛媛県今治市出身ということもあって、親近感が持てるグループ。 
　英語の歌も見事に歌いこなす彼女だが、本人によると英語はまったく話せないそうだ。で、プライベートで海外に行くと、地元の人たちと触れあるよりも、建物を眺めたり、いわゆるヒューマン・ウォッチングを楽しんだり、故郷へ想いを馳せながら、空想の世界に入り込むらしい。
　I don't speak any English. So when I go on holiday abroad on my own, rather than chatting with the locals, I look at the buildings and do some people-watching, and I drift off into thoughts of my countryside hometown and the things that are important to me.
　
　新しいアルバムの編集作業も、この３月の初めには一曲を残してほぼ完了というまさにその時、東北大震災が起こった。彼女の心は悲しみで満たされ、自身の声を生かして被害に苦しむ人たちのために何かできることはないだろうかと模索し、アカペラでSunshine Sunshineという曲を歌うことを決心した。

  　東京で開催される印象派の展覧会を紹介する記事。今回の展覧会は、マネ、モネ、ドガ、ルノワール、ゴッホなどに代表される印象派の作品は83点にも上る。印象派の展覧会は、日本で開かれると必ずと言っていいほど前売りチケットが売り切れてしまうほどの人気を誇る。 
　そんな印象派にも日の目を見ない時期があって、今日では印象派に対する評価は、最悪でもせいぜい「感傷的で、いかにも少女趣味的」と言われる程度。19世紀のフランスでは、鼻つまみ者扱いされていたという。
　The exhibition boasts 83 works, including nearly a dozen each by Edourad Manet and Pierre-Auguste Renoir, a half-dozen by Edgar Degas and Claude Monet as well as good handful of Vincent Van Gogh and Paul Cezanne paintings, and much more.
　It is perhaps difficult to imagine why the Impressionists caused such a stink in 19th-century France.

　聖書あるいは神話に登場する場面で自然の描写が理想化されてしまっていた伝統的な手法に逆らって、自然をありのままに描き、さらに裸の女性たちと組み合わせたことが、当時の美術界の重鎮の顰蹙を買ったのかもしれない。

　原発への依存体質が形成された理由は、エネルギーの需要が急激に高まったというだけではなく、地球温暖化も大きな要因だ。アメリカ、ヨーロッパをはじめロシアや中国でも毎年のように、熱波、大雨、洪水、竜巻により死亡したり、非難を余儀なくされている人の数は計り知れない。さらに、アフリカでは次々に湖が消滅したり、収縮したりしている。その結果、世界が求めるエネルギー源は、化石燃料から温室効果ガスを排出しないクリーンエネルギーである原発へと大きく転換しつつあった。
　しかし、福島での原発事故を受け、人類は放射能の恐怖を嫌というほど味わうことになり、今後求められるのはエネルギーの転換ではなく、これまでの産業システムの変革である。つまり、大量生産、大量消費、大量廃棄という産業構造だ。

　物質的な豊かさのみを追い求めるのではなく、生活の質を高めることに価値を見出す必要がある。人々の関心は、文化、高い教養、医療、介護、自然環境、安全、安心の再評価へと向かっている。
　People's needs have greatly changed in recent years as they tend to seek fulfillment from human values rather than from material affluence alone. People are attaching more and more importance to values such as culture, sophistication, medical treatment, nursing care, the natural environment, safety and security.

　それと同時に、我々には知識と技術とを総動員してエネルギーを効率的に使用し、いわゆるグリーンエネルギーの比重を拡大しなければならない。
　それでも原発への依存を完全に断ち切ることは不可能だろうから、原発の安全性と効率の両者のせめぎ合いの中で最適な条件とは何かを考える必要があるだろう。
　At the same time, we should mobilize our knowledge and skills to use energy efficiently and expand the use of green energy.

　今後日本に求められることは、今回の福島の事故原因を徹底的に検証し、その結果を世界に公表し、原発の安全性の向上に寄与することである。
　Japan should thoroughly study the causes of the accidents, examine relevant remedial measures and then share its conclusions at a global level in order to help guarantee the safety of nuclear power generation.
June 20 Triple disaster proves need for an industrial revolution -part Ⅰ-
　「今回の大災害から、日本人は多くの貴重な教訓を得たが、とりわけ日本が便利さと豊かさを享受しているその産業システムを大幅に変革する必要があると痛切に感じたことだ。震災後の日本の復興のためには、18世紀の産業革命に匹敵するような産業の構造変革が必要だ。」と元通商産業事務次官の福川伸次氏は説く。　
　 The triple calamity of a massive quake, tsunami, and a nuclear power plant crisis inflicted enormous damage along the northeastern coast of Japan, while providing a number of precious lessons. The foremost lesson is that the disasters have brought home to us the urgent need to make changes in our industrial civilization.

　氏は続ける。「ただ、先の産業革命はその前提として、資源自然と再生能力は無限にあるという考えがあった。しかし今回の産業革命では、その前提は通用しないところからも、根本からまったく異なったアプローチが必要である。」
　The Industrial Revolution of the 18the century rested on the premise that Earth's resources and nature's recycling capability are everlasting. Critics point out that this premise has begun to break up. The unprecedented East Japan calamity has aptly proved their opinions correct.

　そもそも、なぜ世界がエネルギー源の転換を余儀なくされたのかというと、爆発的な人口増加と新興国の急激な経済発展。世界のエネルギー需要は、2035年までに50％の増加が見込まれ、その埋蔵量のピークが過ぎて減少する一方の石油価格は、上昇し続けることになり、産油国の政情不安も解決の糸口さえ見えない。
　The world's energy demand is increasing drastically due to sharp population growth as well as brisk economic development of emerging nations. The Institute of Energy Economics, Japan, estimates that global energy demand will grow about 50 percent through 2035. Oil prices persistently rise even as the world's oil resources have passed their peak and begun to wane. Meanwhile, political unrest persists in some major oil-producing countries.　
June 17　Boiling water charges cellphones
　地震など災害時に、電力がなくても携帯が充電できる「電力鍋」が売りに出された。薪や石炭、ガソリンなどの火を使って充電ができるため今後ますます需要が高まりそうだ。
　仕組みはこうだ。鍋底に鉄製の導体が取り付けられており、お湯の温度で導体の温度は上昇するが、鍋自体の温度はそのままなので、その温度差を電圧に変換する。

　A pot enabling users to charge their cellphones by boiling water in disaster situations will go on sale later this month.
　Since the device can charge cellphones and other devices using open flames from firewood, charcoal, gas and other sources, it would be useful as a backup for emergencies such as natural disasters.
　The product is unaffected by the weather or the time of the day, unlike solar energy, and since the motor don't shake, it's hard to break.
　The pot contains an iron-covered conductor at the bottom. The conductor is high in temperature while the pot itself is cooler, causing a difference in temperature that can be converted to electric voltage.
June 15, 2011　Murakami slams nuclear policy
　村上春樹が、スペインのカタルニャ賞受賞スピーチで、日本の原発政策を痛烈に批判したと報じられた。今回の福島第一原子力発電所の事故を「日本が自らが招いた」とし、「世界で唯一の被爆国である日本は、原発にNOと言い続けなければならない」と述べた。
　A mistake committed by our very own hands. Murakami said Japan, as the only nation to have experienced the devastation and suffering from radiation through World War Ⅱ atomic bombings, should have continued saying "no" to nuclear power.
　
　また、福島での事故は、日本人にとって二回目の被爆となり、放射能のが世界と人体に残す傷跡を身をもって体験した日本人は断固として原発に反対すべきだとも語った。
　"The accident at the Fukushima No.1 nuclear power plant is the second major nuclear detriment that the Japanese people have experienced."
　The Japanese people, having learned through the sacrifice of the hibakusha just how badly radiation leaves scars on the world and human wellbeing, should have continued to stand firm in rejecting nuclear power.

毎年の恒例行事化しているらしい、AKBの総選挙が行われ、前田敦子が首位に返り咲いたそうだ。個人的にはまったく興味無いのだが、英字新聞の記事になっていたので取り上げてみた。
　dethroneは、「首位の座から引きずり落とす」。
　AKB48's Atsuko Maeda made a comeback Thursday after being voted the most popular member of the all-girl pop group, dethroning 2010 winner Yuko Oshima.

　SKEとかNMBとかが出てくるが、この三者の関係はいったいどうなっているのだろうか。とにかく、22枚目のCDが８月にリリースされる予定だ。
　The annual vote selected 21 members for AKB48's 22nd single due for release in August, from about 150 candidates, including those in similar pop groups, such as SKE48 and NMB48.

課題文
　インターネットの急激な発達のおかげで、ほんの10年前までは不可能だったことが、簡単にできる時代になった。
　大学入試問題をネットに(1)流出させるのは論外だが、チュニジアの「ジャスミン革命」では、デモの動員にツイッターやフェイスブックなどの(2)ネットメディアが重要な役割を果たしたとされる。
　(3)その両方とも未経験、アナログ世代の代表である当方としては、強固な(4)権力を津波のように押し流す原動力となったネットの威力に今更ながらに驚く。
　ネットと個人の(5)付き合い方を振り返ると、その革新的な便利さに感動した第Ⅰ期、(6)「できる」ことの急拡大を持て余した第Ⅱ期を経て、ようやく(7)使いこなす賢さを身に付け始めたのではないか。

　Thanks to the rapid development of the Internet, the time has come when things which once seemed impossible just a decade ago have become easily achievable.
　It is out of the question to leak the questions of the entrance examination on the Internet. However, in Jasmine revolution of Tunisia the net media, including Twitter and Facebook are said to have played a vital role in mobilizing people for demonstrations.
　I am one of the representatives who are unfamiliar with either of them. Therefore I am much surprised that the power of the Internet has become a driving force in ousting the great authority from the power like a tsunami.
　When we look back on the relationship between the Internet and people, we can see three distinct stages. The first came the period when we were moved by its revolutionary convenience. Then the second period, when the rapid expansion of its versatility got out of our hands. Finally came the current stage, when we have learned to use it wisely.

June 6, 2011　Germany fails to clinch plum jobs
　経済大国であるドイツから、次期IMF専務理事候補の名前が挙がってこないが、これはドイツのEUにおける政治的影響力の低下を示すとの見方がある。
　Germany is an economic giant, but the race to be the next head of the International Monetary Fund(IMF) looks set to show once again that it has no candidates for top jobs in international institutions. Nations are also judged on their ability to occupy top international jobs. Germany, Europe's biggest economy by far, has none of them right now.

　現在EU代表はベルギー人、欧州委員会長はポルトガル人、EU共通外交・安全保障上級代表はイギリス人だ。ドイツ人でEU最高位の役職に就いているのはエネルギー長官くらいのものである。
　The EU president is a Belgian, the president of the European Commission is Portuguese and the EU foreign policy chief is British. Germany's highest-ranking European official is energy commissioner.

　確かに、2000年から2004年の間、IMFのトップはドイツ人だったが、それはもはや昔のことであり、世界的金融危機以前のことだから、現在ほど銀行の果たす役割は重要ではなかった。
　It is is true that from 2000-2004 the head of the IMF was a German, but that is some time ago, and was before the global financial crisis, when the bank was less important than it is now.

　しかし、一方で次のような見方もある。つまり、ドイツは物事がうまくはかどるように裏で糸を引く役回りー名を捨てて、実を取るーを選んだのだ。
　Since World War Ⅱ, Germany has been very prudent when it comes to occupying top political jobs. Germany is content to pull the strings behind the scenes in order to make sure thing go its way. For many Germany, prestige is of secondary importance.

経済産業省は12日、東京電力と東北電力管内に拠点がある業界団体向けに、この夏の電力需給対策の説明会を開いた。
　最大使用電力を前年比で20～25％減らすため、経産省は、大口需要家は25％減、小口需要家は20％減という目標を示したが、出席団体からは、小口需要家の節電の難しさが指摘された。

　最初の、経済産業省The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industryはぜひ知っておくべき英語。
　次の「電力需給対策」は分かると思う。「～の管内に拠点がある」はin the district of ～で処理する。
　「前年比」をfrom the previous yearというのは、簡単な表現だが意外と思いつかない。また、「20％減らす」は日本語には表れない「差」を表すbyが必要。
　「大口需要家」と「小口需要家」だが、それぞれbig users, small usersで簡単に表わせる。
　最後に「節電」は、save electricityが一般的に使われるが、「エネルギー等を大切に使う」という意味のconserveも覚えておきたい単語。
訳例
　 The Ministry of ( Economy, Trade and Industry ) held a meeting on the 12th to (explain) its plans in ( dealing with ) electricity ( supply ) and ( demand ) during summer this year, to industrial associations in the ( district ) of Tokyo Electric Power Co. and Tohoku Electric Power Co.
　The Ministry ( indicated ) its goal to reduce the ( maximum )( use ) of electric power ( by ) 20% to 25% ( from ) the ( previous ) year, namely 25% for ( big ) users and 20% for ( small ) ones. 　Playing sports is a good way to get injured.
　直訳すると、「スポーツをするのは、怪我をするのにいい方法だ。」で、意訳は「スポーツに怪我はつきものだ。」となる。
　初心者向けの講座で使っているテキストに載っていた英文だが、goodとget injuredの組み合わせに少し違和感を抱いた。運動嫌いの人が書いたスピーチという設定になっていたから、てっきり「怪我をしたいのなら、スポーツでもおやりになれば？」と、皮肉を込めた文かと思いきやそうでもないようだ。
　知り合いのアメリカ人によると、「たばこを吸うと癌にかかりやすい。」なども、Smoking is a good way to get cancer.と普通に表現するようだ。
　少しニュアンスが違うかもしれないが、contributeも「貢献する」という訳から、多くの日本人はプラスのイメージしか持っていないが、Too much salt can contribute to high blood pressure.
など、好ましくない場合にも使われる。

アメリカ中西部で複数の竜巻が発生し、多数の建物が倒壊するなどして125人以上が死亡し、1,500人が行方不明となっている。
　Rescue teams and anguished families Wednesday were desperately searching for nearly 1,500 people listed as missing since a tornado ripped through a Missouri town, killing at least 125 residents.
　「竜巻が直撃した」をrip through(切り裂く)という表現を使っていて、竜巻の恐怖が伝わってくる。

　But hopes of finding more survivors were fading as the third day of painstaking searches through the devastated homes of Joplin found no one in the rubbleーeither dead or alive.
　瓦礫はrubbleだが、debris(フランス語由来であるため、最後のsは発音されず「デブリー」と読む)もよく使われる。
　
　Officials are hoping that many of the missing have simply failed to check in with friends or family.
　当局は、「行方不明者の多くが、単に家族や友人と連絡が取れない状態にあるだけだ。」との見方をしている。
　check in with 人 = 人と連絡を取る

　In what is one of the worst tornado seasons on record after a series of twisters killed hundreds in South U.S. states last month, Sunday's twister in Joplin is now the worst single tornado to strike America in six decades.
　日曜日にミズーリー州のジョプリンを襲った竜巻は、単独のものとしては過去60年間で最悪の規模であった。
　文頭のIn what is one of the worst tornado seasons…は、単純に言い換えるならIn one of the worst tornado seasons…となる。
