Aug 31 Star's exit shows it's not what you know-but who
If you asked anyone in the world with access to any sort of media what last week's big news stroy was, they would probably say Libya.
If you asked the same question of similarly connected people in Japan, they would probably say the retirement of comedian Shinsuke Shimada.
The fall of Tripoli didn't merit lead stroy status on most TV news reports here, but Shimada's announcement was honored with program-interrupting bulletins.

Aug 28 Bolt disqualified from 100m after false start in final
The Jamaican sensation played to the adoring crowd again Saturday at the world championships, blowing on his fingers as if to cool off the tips of his imaginary pistols and mugging for the camera at every opportunity.

Once he settled into the starting blocks, Bolt put on a show in the 100 meters. He was well out in front of the field after his first step and so far ahead by the midway point that he looked back at the pack with a big, you-can't-catch-me grin on his face, easily winning his heat in 10.10 seconds."It was a good run," Bolt said, nonchalantly.

Bolt has been hearing about how he's lost a step this season and runners such as Trinidad and Tobago's Richard Thompson or Jamaican teammate Yohan Blake are ready to take away his title at the worlds.

The always affable Bolt was better than both Saturday night and barely even broke a sweat. Thompson was third in his heat (10.34), while Blake had little trouble winning in 10.12.

"People are always going to say what they want," Bolt said. "I'm focused on what I want. My focus is to go out there and win, execute and show the world I'm still the best."

Bolt was out in front of the field so fast that it looked like he was given a head start.

With Tyson Gay sidelined because of a surgically repaired hip and world leader Asafa Powell withdrawing two days ago because of a groin injury, Bolt's main rivals aren't there to give him a nudge.
That's all right - he still has the clock. And at major events, that's become his biggest competitor.

Aug 25 Prosecutors to drop case against Strauss-Kahn
Prosecutors on Tuesday were to seek formal dismissal of criminal charges in a sexual-assault case against former International Monetary Fund leader Dominique Strauss-Kahn.

The prosecution says persistent lies by the hotel maid from Guinea who accused him of trying to rape her in his posh suite made it impossible for them to determine what really happened.

In a 25-page court document filed Monday, Manhattan prosecutors described the lies and inconsistencies they said had shattered the housekeeper’s credibility, delved into DNA evidence they said showed sexual contact but not necessarily a forced encounter, and discussed why they saw medical findings as inconclusive.

そして分かりづらいのが、delved into DNA evidence they said showed sexual contact but not necessarily a forced encounterの部分。
 挿入句であるthey saidがなければ、ここはDNA evidence showing sexual contactとすべきだが、they saidがあるので主格の関係代名詞whichは省略できる。

Aug 21 Potential treatment for Alzheimer's
A team of Japanese researcher has found that electrical stimulation therapy to treat people suffering from severe depression may also be effective in treating Alzheimer’s disease.
While current medication for Alzheimer’s mainly delays the progression of the disease, electrical stimulation therapy directly suppresses the effects of a protein maily responsible for the disease.

The team focused on a channel for potassium ion, which protects cells from dying. A cell has multiple channels that allow ions to enter and exit, but the one for potassium ion doesn’t open when it should due to the effects of the key disease-causing protein, beta amyloid.

The team attached electrodes to the ears of a mouse genetically modified to accumulate beta amyloid in their cells. When the researchers gave the mouse electrical stimuli, a different type of protein emerged that helps open the channel, possibly paving the way for preventing the cell from dying.
The therapy offers promise for treating those who are in the early stages of Alzheimer’s and who have yet to suffer extensive cell deaths.
Aug 8 Free online tutorials may alter nature of learning
Salman khan thinks schools should work differentlystudents should learn lessons online and do homework and project in class.
This “flipping” of the traditional classroom is the operating system espoused by Khan and his Khan Academy, a website whose popularity is exploding as millions tune into its free videos, practice exercises and assessment tools.
Khan’s videos provide basic tutorials, mostly in math and science, that students can watch repeatedly in class or at home and pause if they need tosomething that cannot happen with a classroom lecture. Teachers are then free to work individually with students and be more creative.

If you are wondering as to why someone will turn to an online tutor when one can simply access the lessons on the site himself, then let us make it clear that a tutor serves many purposes, one of the major ones being mentoring the students and motivating him in the right direction.
If the student is self motivated and eager to learn, sharpen his skills, then there is nothing like it and Khan Academy, with its 2100 tutorials, more than 100 practice tests and performance assessment tools is a great resource for them.

 A world-class education for everyone that’s free.

Technology is not going to replace teachers, but it empowers them to be much more effective with students.
There is unbelievable opportunity that we have to leverage how people learn through technology.

Good teachers listen to students and understand their prior experience to discover where they lack understanding.
 Teachers are becoming directors.
The teacher is not the only one imparting knowledge. The teacher becomes much more of a facilitator of learning.

Students like the fact that the videos are intelligent and don’t talk down to them. They like that they don’t focus on memorizing. Teachers like that it’s not just trying to crank out a syllabus. …It’s about getting rid of these scripted lectures and formulaic lesson plans. This actually makes teachers more important; they can switch gears and from bonds with their students. It allows them to be way more creative than they could in other classrooms. If students are learning the basics through watching videos, then teachers can spend class time on more creative projects instead of practice drills and homework assignments.

Aug 7 the Naoki Prize

"Shitamachi Rocket" is the story about a small, family-run factory struggling with banks and large companies in pursuing its dream of manufacturing a Japanese rocket part.

The judges seem to have particularly wanted to recognize an affirmative work about the small businesses now struggling since the March 11 quake and tsunami.

 After winning the Naoki Prize, Mr. Ikeido said he was particularly pleased with the recognition of business novels, a genre that hasn't received much attention from the literary establishment. Popular form the 1950s, such novels are generally read for information on how businesses operate;
they do not have the thrills of a hero fighting a villainous plot of a Western legal or medical thriller.
As he started thinking about why company men would act in certain ways, he realized he had to
move beyond treating characters as pawns and portray them as flesh and blood human beings, letting the characters determine the plot rather than vice versa.

Aug 4 A bad summer for beer halls
Summer in Japan has traditionally meant fireworks and beer halls, but this year the post-March 11 earthquake mood seems to be continuing,
casting a shadow over these hot-weather staples.
In fact, half-year sales of cheap, "third-category" low-malt beers were up 3.2 percent, presumably meaning more people were staying in and drinking at home.

On the other hand, the new popularity of Korean drinks, as well as the continuing sales of canned highball drinks, suggests there may be
a larger trend away from beer beyond the post-quake depressed mood of consumers.

In one welcome sign that summer lightheartedness has not been entirely lost, a new parfait is on sale at a Tokyo hotel whose height each day is determined by that day's weather forecast. On a day with a temperature of 32 degrees, it is 32-cm tall, giving at least one benefit to a hot day.
