a blind runner with a seeing eye
I am going to visit Miyazaki Prefecture
next month to participate in a 10km
race.
This race will be a special one for
me, partly
because it is the first time to run
in Miyazaki,
but mainly because it is the race for
the
blind.
Until I turned forty, I had been
running
just for myself. Then I thought of
volunteering.
I asked myself if there was anything
I could
do for others. One of my acquaintances
told
me about running with a blind person.
Running
is one of my hobbies and just by running
I can support a person in need of help.
I
thought it was a really great idea,
so about
a year ago I made up my mind to take
part
in " the Aoshima Taiheiyo Marathon."
In order to get information on this race,
I sent email to a staff of the Municipal
Office of Miyazaki city. The staff was kind
enough to let me know how to apply for the
race and send me the forms to fill out. We
have exchanged emails several times. She
has helped me a lot. I was glad to get to
know her.
Now I have some brochures on running
with
blind people and they have a lot of
useful
information. If you are interested
in running
with a blind person, you may be interested
in these brochures.
How to run with the blind ( Reference:The Guidebook for Running with
the blind)
How to run
with the blind |
Use a ring of rope 1 meter long. Hold the
other end of it. When crowded, shorten the
rope. |
Position |
Running side by side or a little behind the
blind person. Be careful not to run ahead
of him/her. |
Course |
Let a blind person know about 10 meters before
ups and downs, curves and steps.
As for curves, let the blind
person know
by saying, "curve in the
direction of
2 o'clock." |
For safety sake |
When there is any danger or obstacle, pace
down and shorten the rope. |
Miscellaneous |
If possible, describe the scenery and cheering
people along the course so that the blind
person can enjoy running even more. |
