ホテルの宿泊、レストランでの注文、空港での搭乗手続き、デパートでの買
い物などの
場面設定会話（資料①）
を学習後、英語で指示を書いてあるカード（資料②）を与えておく。教室内
に各コーナーを設け、生徒を店員・受付役と客役にグループ分けする。客役の生
徒は、自分が引いたカードに指示されている場所に行き、指示された用件を果た
す。その際、カードの自己評価を記入したり、相手による評価を記入してもらう
。
教室内に次のようなコーナーを設ける。

「場面設定会話」をより高度な活動へと発展させた指導方法につい
て紹介したい。この交流会後、これまで授業で取り組んできたディベイト指導と
今回の場面設定会話を結びつける方法はないものかと思案してきたが、次のような方法を考案した。
まず、各コーナーの設定を、デパートの「客と店員」、銀行の「客と行員」、
交番の「外国人と駐在員」から、家庭の「親と子」、
学校の「教師と生徒」という設定に変える。そして、会話を始めるに当たって、
次のような条件を与える。
1 Parent & Child
Your child wants to dye his/her hair blonde. You don't like it. Persuade
him/her out of dyeing.
2 Parent & Child
Your child wants to study abroad right after the graduation from high school.
You'd like him/her to enter the University in Japan. Persuade him/her to
study in Japan.
3 Teacher & Student
Your student wants to do a part-time job during summer vacation. You would
like him/her to study much harder. Persuade him/her to give it up.
このように生徒が日常身近に感じる条件のもとで、お互いに自分の立場を説明し、
相手の説得を試みるのである。これで場面設定会話とディベイトとをうまく結びつけることができ、
楽しみながらディベイトができると考える。もちろん、初期の段階では、
「自分の立場の説明」と「相手に対する質問」だけでもよい。最終的に、
ディベイトのテクニックを必要とする「相手を説得させる」レベルまで到達すればよいと考える。
資料② カードの指示例
1. You want to buy your father a tie for his birthday and in the evening
you'll have a dinner at a restaurant with your family. So you have to reserve
a restaurant.
