Let's Sew Fabric Mask
The shortage of masks has continued since the COVID-19 pandemic started. As a measure to that, the Japanese Government started sending two fabric masks to each household in Japan in the middle of April. Also, the number of companies producing masks is increasing as some companies are extending their production to making masks. Another option is to sew fabric masks at home. The sewing pattern can be downloaded from the website of the Matsuyama Business College which operates three technical colleges in Matsuyama. Although double-layered gauze is best for lining fabric masks, it is currently hard to find in stores. Japanese towels "tenugui", and thin breathable towels can also work well. The size of the mask provided by the government might be too small. If it is, taking it apart and using the material might be a good idea. If you can't find elastic bands, polyurethane used in leotards and swimsuits could be cut in 7 mm strips. The S-size pattern is designed for children around 10 years old, M-size is for women, and L is for men. http://www.mbc1946.ac.jp/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/efde8b56e9bcd8e0b6bfa1145711c534-1.pdf (May 11, Ehime Shimbun Online)
Online Sales of Frozen Pizza Supported by CF
Sun-Crea Co., Ltd. which manages Riverside Lodge "Mizugiwa-no-Lodge", at Nametoko Gorge in southern Ehime announced it succeeded in raising their target of 2 million yen by crowdfunding to start online sales of frozen pizza. They expanded their target to 3.5 million yen to launch another project for a catering vehicle for freshly baked bread. Riverside Lodge is currently closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. A project for online sales of pizza made with locally grown ingredients at the Italian restaurant in the lodge was established as a sustainable project during this period. To fundraise for this project, appeal for support was made through the CF website "CAMPFIRE". The target was hit in three days. The funds will be used to get a freezer for their pizza, develop the web-site for selling and introducing the pizza and for locally grown agricultural products and processed foods items. It will also be used for advertising to promote the town itself. About 10 kinds of frozen pizza will be sold for 1000 yen-2000 yen in the middle of June. Freshly baked breads using locally grown yuzu citrus in Uwajima will also be sold in the catering vehicle. Donors will be given coupons for free pizza, free meals at the restaurant, and even a stay in the lodge (valid until June 30) in thanks for their support. The lodge plans to reopen on June 1. Matsuyama promotes SDGs Action
Matsuyama city has started working full-scale on SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals: 17 goals set by the United Nations, including No Poverty and Reduced Inequality). The city established an SDGs Promotion Council in February. 49 organizations in the central Ehime area already took part in the council. While the spread of COVID-19 is influencing various problems such as human rights and compensation, they emphasize the importance of the SDGs slogan "No one will be left behind." Ehime Bank has been working on SDGs promotion such as a joint donation with other businesses. Ehime University established an SDGs Promotion Office in October 2019 and held a symposium in January 2020. They said, "COVID-19 has loomed as a mutual enemy to all humanity. The core idea of SDGs is to stop discrimination and to value mutual help. We should create a society where a COVID-19 positive patient receives a warm welcome after discharge. No one knows when they will get sick. And we should avoid high prices for the vaccine when it is developed so it will reach everyone." (May 6, Ehime Shimbun)
Personal Covid-19 Record Book
The Taiyo Printing Co., Ltd. (Matsuyama City) devised a notebook for managing physical health conditions and a poster for encouraging people to wash their hands often and avoid the 3Cs (closed spaces, crowded places and close-contact settings) to reduce the risk of infection by the novel coronavirus. The company plans to donate 500 notebooks and 100 posters to the prefecture on May 7th. The notebook is based on the one developed by the Wakatsuki Printing Company (Yamagata Prefecture) in April. The company wanted to contribute to the prevention of infection by using their printing technology. The notebook is named 'Corona NO! te?' (B6, 16 pages). It can be used to record daily body temperature, abnormal smell and taste sensations, coughs and sore throats, which are the initial symptoms of Covid-19. Space is provided to write down the history of changes in physical condition, going out, whom you met, and so on. The cover design features Mikyan, the Ehime prefecture mascot. The poster uses illustrations to show how to wash hands correctly and what the 3Cs are. Taiyo is considering donating the notebooks and posters to city offices of central Ehime and selling them. Sticker for Cars from Outside Ehime
Ehime Kurashi Network (Ehime Life Network) (Matsuyama City: a group that provides support for immigrants) devised a sticker for local residents of Ehime. The sticker has a picture of a mandarin orange with the words 'Live In Ehime.' Yoshio Itagaki, the representative director of the organization, said, "the sticker was produced for residents who have cars with license plates from other prefectures. We hope the sticker will help relieve any concern they may have about being misunderstood as nonessential or on a non-urgent outing. We also want more local resident car owners with an Ehime license plate to use the sticker." There are two types of sticker designs, round and square. A popular vote for the two designs is being held until May 6th. The design chosen by the vote will be sold as a magnetic sticker for 1000 yen. A favor returned from China
In February, when the novel coronavirus infection was spreading in China, some schools and companies in Ehime sent 60 thousand face masks, protective clothing, and alcohol disinfectant to Chinese cities such as Wuhan, with the Ehime Chinese Association as an intermediary. At the end of March, as the epidemic had started to slow down in China, some companies and local government organizations in China proposed they donate 20 thousand masks in return. The Association bought another 20 thousand masks from China and presented a total of 40 thousand masks to schools and medical institutions in Ehime. Each box of 50 masks has a sticker with an illustration of a handshake with the two countries' flags and a message that said "Just hold hands to spread the circle of help,". They also donated 4 thousand masks and 100 items of protective gear to Ehime prefecture. Uwajima, in southern Ehime, also sent 10 thousand masks to its friendship city of Xiangshan in China early this year. The Xiangshan government, after learning of the confirmation of the first infection in Ehime, donated 480 protective suits and 10 thousand pairs of gloves to Uwajima. The city distributed them to a municipal hospital in April. (April 21, 22, Ehime Shimbun)
