ここで紹介しているのは､すべてニュースで実際に使われていた表現です。
森首相がその発言において軽率の謗りを免れないのは事実としても､これほど手厳しく書き立てる必要があるのでしょうか。
外国人が読めば「なぜそんな人物を首相にしたのだろう」と、日本人の常識が疑われるのでは。
国民が投票して国の最高指導者を選ぶアメリカ人が、その大統領に対して高い誇りを持っているのとは対照的な気がします。
それだけ､日本では政治家の質が低いということでしょうか。それとも国民やマスコミが政治に対して、
強い関心を持ち厳しい目を向けているということなのでしょうか。（マスコミも、
文部大臣当時の森さんに対してはその将来性をずいぶん高く評価していたはずと私は記憶しているのですが、
今では「IT」を「イット」と読んだというまことしやかな嘘を書かれるほどコケされているのです。）
それにしても、下の表で一番最後に紹介している"I
have always been cool and collectd"という唯一の誉め文句が､総理自身の言葉というのは少しかわいそうでもあり､
また空しく響きます。

加藤氏の空騒ぎの後、自民党内の結束が少しは強まるのかと思いきや､またまた幹事長による厳しい発言が出ました。この記事の新聞見出し(Don't
get cocky)は直訳すると、「生意気になるな」でした。まあ、実際には「謙虚になりなさい(work
humbly)」くらいの訳になるのでしょうか。野党による内閣不信任案が否決されたにもかかわらず(despite
the disapproval of the no-confident motion
against his Cabinet)、森降ろしはまだまだ続くようです(another
attempt within the LDP to unseat Mori)。
幹事長が"The recent disapproval never
determined the confidence of Prime Minister
Mori."と発言したものですから､首相と橋本派はその発言の印象を和らげようと(play
down)躍起になり、「結果を厳しく受け止め､信任されたとは思わずにしっかりやってくれという叱咤激励(He
expressed high expectations that he places
on me, encourage and admonished me.)」と解説しましたが、ちょっと苦しいか。
森首相の頼みの綱である橋本派内にもいろいろ不満がくすぶって(smoldering)いるようです。

and urging that he resign at an early date
○ distancing itself from Mori and aspiring
to take the initiative in the selection of
the next prime minister and Cabinet members
○ demanding that Mori, whose approval
rates have plummeted, step down at an early
date
○ We don't want to commit suicide with

しかしながら、「それでは誰を次の首相に」となるとどうもいずれも決め手を欠き、支持率が低迷しているという理由だけで(simply
because approval rates for his Cabinet are
hovering low)森首相を辞任させることはむつかしいようで、しばらくは低空飛行のまま飛びつづけそうです。
