Shimanami Kaido designated as an official cycling route
The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism designated three cycling roads in Japan, including the Shimanami Kaido as National Cycling Routes. Once so designated, each route can expect to receive governmental support for the promotion and improvement of infrastructure. The National Cycling Route designation aims to create new value for sightseeing and revitalize the regions through cycling tour promotion to attract cyclists both domestically and internationally. The first three routes were selected in September. The others are the Tsukuba Kasumigaura Rin-Rin Road in Ibaraki Prefecture and the Biwa-Ichi in Shiga Pref., a circle trip in Lake Biwa.
